The Second Skin
This Second Skin is inspired by a quote from the brief, The advent of migration bought different affluences: visitors, refugees and migrants escaping war, conflicts, poverty, political, social or cultural conflict. All have influenced Australian culture, society and lifestyle and have brought a different way of understanding to what is Australian. This quote brings to mind Lara's two grandfathers, one who migrated to Australia on his own at 19 from Italy, and the other who migrated to Australia with his family at the age of 18 from England. Each brought their own experiences with them and through interviews the designer used their views on Australia both past and present to shape her work. The piece is a development of similarities and differences between each of her grandfathers. These are portrayed through patchworks of weaving which are sewn into a blanket that each of them could have used for comfort and warmth on the long journey to Australia. The blanket has a second use, which is that it can be hung in either of their houses as a statement that they have made it through a tough journey. The piece is made from Polyester, acrylic and wool yarns to make use of a combination of properties. It is mainly black, white and grey in colour but also has touches of blue and green within. The rug has fringe on each ends as well as at the joining points of the patches to symbolise their ties to their new home country. If the rug was to be manufactured it would be made at a larger scale approximately 1:3.
